PHLEBOTOMISTS: Specialized healthcare professionals primarily responsible for drawing blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research. Their role combines technical skill, patient care, and strict administrative accuracy.
Primary Responsibilities
- Venipuncture and Dermal Puncture: Performing blood draws using needles (venipuncture) or finger/heel sticks (capillary punctures).
- Patient Identification: Verifying patient identity to ensure that blood samples are matched to the correct medical records.
- Patient Interaction: Explaining procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and monitoring them for adverse reactions like fainting or dizziness.
- Sample Labeling and Processing: Carefully labeling vials with patient names, dates, and times, then preparing them for transport to a laboratory.
- Equipment Maintenance: Sterilizing tools, disposing of "sharps" (needles) in biohazard containers, and maintaining a clean work area to prevent infection.
Specialized Tasks
- Mobile Services: Traveling to private residences or insurance offices to collect samples.
- Point-of-Care Testing: Performing basic bedside tests, such as checking blood glucose levels.
- Data Entry: Entering patient information and lab results into electronic health record (EHR) systems.

Harborview School Certified Phlebotomy Technician Training has the following requirements.
- Must be 18 years old and present a photo ID at the time of registration
- Present HS Diploma / GED or College Transcripts
- Proof of Malpractice insurance on or before the first day of class.
- Complete application form
- Complete an updated physical and PPD form.
